Is it Possible to Connect an Outdoor Gas Line to My Grill?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT AN OUTDOOR GAS LINE TO MY GRILL?

AH, SUMMER… TIME TO GRILL

The sunshine is here, the kids are playing kickball, and you’re out back, spatula in hand, firing up the grill again. Does it get any better? Well, maybe it could get better with an outdoor gas line connected to your grill…

Small gatherings are becoming safer as we take the proper precautions, which is great! If you’re like me, you’re probably ready to have a burger, share a beer, and chat with the neighbors. And if the party’s at your place this year, we may be able to save you from a classic grilling conundrum: running out of propane. So for all you backyard barbecuers wondering if it’s possible to connect an outdoor gas line to your grill, let’s take a look.

No one wants to be the guy who runs out of propane while entertaining guests. It’s the worst! Going out to get a new tank can be time-consuming. It’s embarrassing to have people waiting around. This may be one of the reasons so many people are asking how to connect a gas line to their outdoor grill this summer. So can you? The answer is… maybe.

YOU’LL NEED YOUR LOCAL PLUMBER ON THIS ONE.

The following video from This Old House (starting around the 50 sec. mark) will give you a good idea of how much goes into the process of connecting a natural gas line. We want to stress, as the video does, that this is not a do-it-yourself job. Many of our friends and customers know us not only as plumbing contractors but as a resource for DIY tips. We love to empower our Columbus community, ♥️ but safety comes first. For this particular project, you need a license.

The biggest question is whether or not your home has a gas supply. If it does, that’s great news! More than likely, your local plumber can set up a gas line to your grill no problem. Plumbing One would love to help get you connected and grilling with confidence this season.

OUTDOOR GAS LINE PROBLEM?

In the event that your gas line has an unrelated issue, a Plumbing One tech will find and fix the issue. Outdoor gas line damage, for instance, can be a serious safety hazard, so once in a while, it’s a good idea to have a residential plumber inspect your gas and water lines. Many times a gas line only needs a small fix, but sometimes replacing a section is required. A plumber can get you a diagnosis and on-the-spot project quote. They’ll check your gas meter’s available capacity (per the above video) and then connect your outdoor gas line. Easy!

If you’d like a Central Ohio plumber to come out for an initial inspection of your home’s gas line to tell you if a line to your grill is possible, we’d be happy to send out a Plumbing One technician. We’ll let you know if that installation is possible and give you an idea of what you’re looking at if you decide to go that route. Feel free to give us a call or send us a message anytime!
